Comedian, actor, writer, and producer Paul Elia has once again taken the independent route with the release of his latest comedy special, Good Son, which he self-produced and financed. Shot at the iconic The Den Theatre in Chicago, the special is now available on Elia’s YouTube channel, @pauleliacomedy.

Currently, Elia is a series regular on A24’s #1 Happy Family USA, created by  long time friend and collaborator Ramy Youssef, where he voices multiple characters, including fan favorite Uncle Ahmed. He also has a recurring role in season two of BET+’s Diarra From Detroit, created by fellow Detroit native Diarra Kilpatrick.

In Good Son, Elia explores the deeply personal and hilarious experience of moving back in with his Iraqi-Assyrian parents after his fiancée (now wife) was accepted into an oral surgery residency in his hometown of Detroit. The special centers on Elia’s inner conflict as he tries to please his old school immigrant parents while confronting the realization that being a “good son” may have made him a bad husband.

“This special is my best work to date,” says Elia. “It’s all the things I always wanted to tell my parents but was too ashamed to admit, kinda like how I was sneaking out my parents house at 37. I’m really proud of how honest I was able to be in it and couldn’t be happier with the final product.”

Whether co-creating the LowKey Comedy Show during the pandemic, performing outdoor sets in secret locations off the back of a pickup truck, hosting digital comedy shows on the audio only app Clubhouse, or self-producing his own specials, Elia has consistently found ways to create on his own terms.

“I’ve always had a strange relationship with Hollywood,” says Elia. “I was self representing myself for years, booking my own shows and finding ways to read for roles in television and film. I had a massive come to Jesus moment and stopped relying on Hollywood to give me an opportunity and started to make my own stuff. If it hits, great! If not, great! I just wanna make stuff I’m proud of at this point and will spend my last dollar doing so.”

Good Son was directed by Elia’s longtime friend Lisa Wiegand (Mayans M.C., Chicago Fire, and Detroit 1-8-7). Elia and Wiegand first met in 2009 while working on Detroit 1-8-7, where Elia was a stand-in for Michael Imperioli, admitting that if it wasn’t for Lisa, he would have never pursued a Hollywood career. The special is executive produced by Azhar Usman, Mohammad Ali, and Logan Potter. Produced by Dan Ringey, Amna Mirza and Greg Van Horn. Edited by Jon Palsgrove, who has edited all of Paul’s previous specials. The 2025 Play on Player tour was sponsored by Nuform Health, a health and wellness company founded by his brother Dr. Christopher Elia. Good Son is now available on Paul Elia’s YouTube channel: @pauleliacomedy
